Tips for Enjoying Indian Food Without Heartburn

It's usually not the spice. Here's what actually causes the discomfort and how to order around it.
A guest told us she loved our food but always regretted it around midnight. We asked what she'd ordered. Butter chicken, korma, cheese naan, two lassis. That's not a spice problem — that's a fat and volume problem.
Here's how to eat this food comfortably.
Know what's actually causing it
- Fat and dairy. Cream-heavy gravies, ghee, cheese naan and fried starters sit heavy and slow digestion. This is the usual culprit.
- Volume. Indian portions are generous and the food is easy to keep eating.
- Fried food. Samosas and pakoras, plus a rich main, is a lot at once.
- Chili, genuinely, for some people — but less often than blamed.
- Raw onion and tomato-heavy gravies if you're prone to reflux.
Order this instead
- Tandoori over creamy. Chicken tikka, seekh kebab, tandoori chicken — grilled, lean, no gravy. Fully flavorful, far lighter.
- Roti or tandoori roti instead of naan. Whole wheat, no butter needed.
- Dry-cooked vegetables — aloo gobi, bhindi masala, baingan bharta — instead of a korma.
- Dal tadka instead of dal makhani. Same lentils, no cream.
- Plain basmati instead of biryani if you want to keep it simple.
- One main, not three.
Small things that help a lot
- Ask for less oil. Any kitchen cooking to order can do this. We can.
- Ask for mild. You lose nothing but the chili.
- Skip the yogurt drink if dairy is your issue — nimbu pani or lemonade instead.
- Finish with chai. Ginger and cardamom are traditional digestives for exactly this reason, and fennel seeds after a meal are the same idea.
- Walk afterward. Unglamorous, effective.
A comfortable full order
Chicken tikka to start · one chicken karahi, mild, light oil · aloo gobi · two tandoori rotis · basmati rice · raita · chai.
That's a real, satisfying Indian dinner that won't wake you up later.
