Indian Food Combinations: What Pairs Well Together?

September 28, 2026 · 4 min read · The Namak Kitchen

Four proven orders for two, four, six and a crowd — built the way we'd build our own family's table.

A good Indian meal has contrast: something smoky, something creamy, something sharp, something plain to calm it all down. Here are four combinations that work every time.

Dinner for two (first-timer friendly)

Chicken tikka · butter chicken · garlic naan · basmati rice · mango lassi.

Smoky start, mild main, bread to scoop, rice to stretch it, yogurt drink to reset your palate. If one of you wants heat, make the second main a chicken karahi instead of adding chili to the butter chicken.

Dinner for four (mixed eaters)

Samosas + seekh kebab · butter chicken · palak paneer · lamb karahi · 4 breads (2 garlic naan, 2 tandoori roti) · basmati rice · raita.

One creamy, one vegetarian, one spice-forward. The raita is doing real work here — it cools the karahi and dresses the rice.

Dinner for six with a vegetarian at the table

Vegetable pakora + paneer tikka · dal makhani · chana masala · butter chicken · chicken biryani · 6 breads · raita · mint chutney.

The biryani anchors it. Nobody notices who is and isn't eating meat, which is the whole point.

Feeding twenty or more

Mixed tandoori platter · butter chicken · chicken karahi · chana masala or aloo gobi · chicken biryani · vegetable biryani · naan by the dozen · raita · salad · gulab jamun.

That's roughly our standard catering build — one dry, two gravies, one vegan, two rices, and dessert. We deliver across Hercules, Pinole, Rodeo, Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Vallejo and further out.

Small pairings worth knowing

  • Raita with anything spicy. Yogurt beats water.
  • Mint chutney with everything from the tandoor.
  • Tamarind chutney with samosas and chaat, for the sour-sweet contrast.
  • Pickled onions with karahi, to cut the richness.
  • Lassi with a hot meal; chai after dessert.
